Blossoms and leaves
Nature has always been a great source of inspiration for Gudrun. In the 1980s, after a break of a few years, when she brought out her watercolour paints and brushes again, she started painting non-stop. Every flower and blade of grass on her beloved island home was preserved on paper. From flowers, she progressed to landscapes, forests, sea, fields and meadows. Nature is her source of peace and harmony – an endless wellspring of creativity and inspiration.

Roses
The beautiful romantic rose is a perennial in Gudrun’s identity as a designer and often adorns her watercolours. Her first rose motif, “Rosamunda”, came out in 1988 on underwear, and since then has featured in many guises in Gudrun’s design, including in knits, embroidery and appliqué. Bold and splendid or dainty and subtle – they have timeless appeal.

Tulips
The tulip originates from Southern Europe, Northern Africa and parts of Asia. One theory is that the name derives from “tuliband”, the Persian word for the tulip-decorated turbans worn by Turkish sultans. The elegant, appealing shape of the tulip has made this flower popular in folk art, just like the rose. Gudrun has often featured tulips in both her prints and knits. She loves to revisit tulips with her paintbrush for their joy-inspiring qualities. Each tulip symbolises renewal and beauty.

Birds
Gudrun’s watercolours blur the lines between flowers in full bloom and chirping birds. The soft contours are the same, and the beak of a bird blends into a petal from her sunflowers. Birds, with their bright, cheerful colours make Gudrun smile, inspiring her to paint them with her flowers. Each watercolour is a harmonious blend of nature’s own beauty in which birds and blooms flow as one in a colourful dance.

Dots
The rounded, playful dots-motif is one of Gudrun’s favourites. With their simple, soft and friendly shapes, dots are a perfect match for her paintbrush. Gudrun’s dots are rounded, yet not perfectly circular, and she loves creating them in every colour under the sun. The large dots have statement value, expressing vitality, while the more dainty dots have a more subtle charm. Together, they form appealing patterns to spread joy and inspire creativity.

Stripes and checks
Gudrun’s striped designs were launched in 1979 and since then have become iconic for her designs. Varying in width and style, from wide to narrow, through even to uneven to dynamic zigzag designs. Similarly, checked designs, large and small in scale, have been recurring motifs in Gudrun designs for years. These classic, timeless motifs are as stylish on their own as they are in combination with each other, and can be mixed to great effect.
